The Center is headquartered at what was formerly the home of James Rose: a landscape theorist, author, and practitioner. James Rose was one of the leaders of the modern movement in American landscape architecture.
The mission of the center is to explore the interrelationship between people and the environment and to contribute to a more sustainable suburban condition through preservation, research and design.

Transportation will not be provided. Parking is available on the surrounding streets of the center. As the Center is in a residential neighborhood, please be aware of parking sign restrictions. Additionally, please do not park in the apartment building lot across from the Center as they are reserved for residents.
Objectives & Course Information
Walking Tour: Experiencing Space and Pattern at the James Rose Center
- View and experience how patterns, inspired by nature, can be repeated on multiple planes to create harmony in landscape architecture.
- Recognize how the changing natural landscape effects both the landscape architecture and built architecture.
- Better understand landscape design as a unique spatial art, related to other arts and architecture.
Lecture: Design Reflections From the James Rose Center
- Relate modern and contemporary design theory to individuals’ sustainable design practices.
- Preserve cultural landscapes more creatively.
- Understand the challenges of preserving an organic environment, and defining the purpose and definition of preservation.
