Project Description

Located along the sand dunes on the island of Avalon, NJ, this beach house today stands as an example of beautiful, ecologically-responsive design. The former landscape of concrete, gravel, and non-native foundation plantings was replaced with drifts of native shrubs, grasses, and perennials designed to both manage on-site stormwater and to blend into the seaside dunes beyond. New greenroofs reduce building impacts on stormwater, with sloping forms that echo the broader landscape. Clean lines and modern paving details of the pool and decks play off of the naturalistic landscaping, all of which was constructed with locally sourced materials.
